2012 STEMworks Conference GIS Winners

Congratulations to Sierra Harrell and Lotus Chen of King Kekaulike High School for winning the 2012 STEMworks Conference GIS Competition! 

Sierra and Lotus, concerned about the safety of King Kekaulike students who walk to and from school, used GIS tools and software to map data collected from Pukalani school walking routes.  Sierra and Lotus will submit their findings and concerns to the Department of Public Works in the hopes that their data will reveal the need for more sidewalks as well as show the best areas to install them.

GIS & GPS - Valuable Tools in Protecting Hawaiian Seabirds

On Lehua Island, 10 miles west of Kauai, Federal and State Wildlife Services are using GIS and GPS to map topography and accurately distribute bait pellets in an effort to eradicate invasive rats and protect seabird populations.

Students Gather GIS Data that Laves Lives

"Hannibal Students Help Make 911 Maps More Accurate; We're Saving Lives, Starting Careers"
HANNIBAL, NY (wrvo) - Oswego County's 911 system is getting more accurate data so dispatchers can help police, fire and ambulance crews go to exactly the right place. The help is coming from an unlikely source: Students in the Hannibal Central School District.

High School Students on Maui were also recently involved in a similar project. They gathered lifeguard station waypoints which were needed by the e911 program operated by Akimeka LLC!

GIS Training for Neighbor Island Teachers Coming Up!

Mapping Our Future: Using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for Place-based Inquiry

This is a professional development opportunity for educators grades 5 -12 on the ArcGIS 9.3 software which was recently licensed for K12 Hawaii. Receive GIS curriculum, Hawaii lessons and data on a jump drive, and a GPS unit! Instructors are Diana Papini Warren, Project Manager at Women in Technology and Joseph Kerski, Education Manager from Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Education Team.

Requirements: This is for neighbor island teachers only. Limited funds available for non-Maui teachers’ travel. Previous experience with GIS, either via a training, work experience, or self-taught.

Oct 6-9 – Kihei, Maui 9:00 – 4:00 Daily
Live Online Follow up Sessions: 10/22, 11/19, and 12/3 3:30 – 5:00 PM

GPS Waypoints onto GoogleEarth

Want to put waypoints from your GPS on GoogleEarth?

The feature you want to use is called, “Add a Placemark”, and it looks like a pushpin and rests along the toolbar along the top of the GoogleEarth window.

What you do is, click the placemark anywhere on a GoogleEarth map, then, a window will pop up in which you can edit the fields for the latitude and longitude according to the waypoints you have saved on your GPS.

Note: You will need to choose in your GPS Setup menu the position format for degrees minutes seconds prior to doing this waypoint editing in GoogleEarth.

GPS Waypoints to AEJEE

Do you have ArcExplorer Java Edition for Education (AEJEE) installed on your computer? Do you have GPS waypoints that you want to add to an AEJEE map project?

See the attached file for the steps to manually transfer GPS waypoints to AEJEE.

TIP: Don't forget the negative symbol for the Hawaii longitude coordinate... we are West of the Prime Meridian! (-x, y = longitude,latitude)
