Dr. Kerski advises "...add a faults and geology layer or a cities layer. Zoom in on a few of them and change the base map to a satellite image.  What do they look like up close? What do they have in common? What are the differences?"

3. World Bank eAtlas of Global Development

Dr. Kerski suggests going into the atlas and creating maps, time series graphs, etc. on 179 indicators covering themes such as poverty, education, economy, and environment. There is also a new printed Atlas of Global Development for sale by www.worldbank.org/publications.

Girl Scouts Explore Waihe‘e Coastal Dunes with GPS

Girls locate waypoints to learn about native plants

Monday, July 26, Girl Scouts from Maui Troop 460 used GPS technology to learn about native plants and historic Hawaiian cultural sites at Waihe‘e Coastal Dunes and Wetlands, Maui Coastal Land Trust. They identified an ancient kuapā (fishpond wall), a puka wai/mākāhā (water way/sluice grate) that once connected the fishpond to the ocean, and plants such as hala, naupaka and pohinahina.

Bizarre Map Contest for Students

"Bizarre Map Challenge" (BMC): A National Map Design Competition

1st prize: $5000 cash

4th - 10th prizes: $200 cash for each

Competition Rules
1. Competition participants must be full-time students in high school, community college, or a university (undergraduate students only) in the United States. The cartographic work and map design must be the original work of the entrant.

Coastlines GIS Project - An Opportunity for Teachers!!

CoastLines 2010 Application is Online!

/CoastLines/ is a three-year Comprehensive Project for Students and
Teachers funded by the Innovative Technologies for Students and Teachers
(ITEST) program at the National Science Foundation (NSF). The project is
introducing fundamental concepts about information technologies (IT) to
grade 7-12 schools. /CoastLines/ is accomplishing this goal by involving
teachers and students in using geographic information systems (GIS) and
global positioning system (GPS) technology to conduct scientific studies
of coastal ecosystems in the NSF’s Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER)
network.

The /CoastLines/ project is now accepting applications from teachers to
participate in the 2010 project cohort. The online application form is
located at: http://www.coastlines.ws. Teachers in the Santa
Barbara/Ventura, California, region are particularly encouraged to
apply. Other educators will be accepted on a space-available basis.

For more information about joining the project, click the Overview tab
on the /CoastLines/ Web site. Click the 2010 Application tab to access
the application form. The application should take approximately 15
minutes to complete.

Mapping Our Future: Using GIS and GPS for Place-based Inquiry

GIS Training for Neighbor Island Teachers Coming Up!

Mapping Our Future: Using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for Place-based Inquiry

This is a professional development opportunity for educators grades 5 -12 on the ArcGIS 9.3 software which was recently licensed for K12 Hawaii. Receive GIS curriculum, Hawaii lessons and data on a jump drive, and a GPS unit! Instructors are Diana Papini Warren, Project Manager at Women in Technology and Joseph Kerski, Education Manager from Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Education Team.

Requirements: This is for neighbor island teachers only. Limited funds available for non-Maui teachers’ travel. Previous experience with GIS, either via a training, work experience, or self-taught.

Oct 6-9 – Kihei, Maui 9:00 – 4:00 Daily
Live Online Follow up Sessions: 10/22, 11/19, and 12/3 3:30 – 5:00 PM
